Over the years, with the fast changing pace of technology, many businesses have taken their focus away from soft skills. Yet Marin’s study in 1918 proved 80% of success is business was due to soft skills and it is still true today – in 2013 Project Oxygen revealed the seven top characteristics for success at Google were soft skills.

As business has neglected soft skills, employees have too. Research from Harvard University shows that whilst 85% of job success comes from soft skills and only 15% from technical skills, the decline of these skills in job candidates in the past 5 years has been significant.

Two of the core soft skills crucial for success in the 21st century are creativity and critical thinking; ranking second and third on the World Economic Forum’s top ten list of skills employees will need to thrive in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Unfortunately, according to a report from the Society for Human Resource Management, 84% of HR professionals report a deficit of these key soft skills within their workforce.

Much of the data and research out there points towards the need and demand for soft skills development and those businesses that recognise this are leading their fields.
